World’s First ‘Mother-Child’ Technique for Recanalizing Central Venous Occlusive Lesions

Publish time:Mar 21 2025

Central venous lesions pose a significant clinical challenge that severely compromises vascular access and dialysis quality. Although interventional procedures remain the first-line treatment, the complex anatomy of central veins results in variable success rates and a long-standing lack of precise, effective diagnostic and therapeutic protocols. Led by Professor WAN Ziming from the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, a dedicated research team, after ten years of persistent exploration, developed the precise, effective, and safe ‘Mother-Child’ interventional technique. This innovative approach successfully overcomes two major technical barriers - directionality and support - elevating the success rate of interventions from the previously reported 40%-80% to over 98% without serious complications. The findings were published in the authoritative Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders and incorporated into the latest British vascular access guidelines. Additionally, a multi-modal, multi-platform, and multi-dimensional technical promotion system was established nationally, training over 400 physicians.
