The Department of Stomatology at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was established in the early 1950s as the city’s first dental specialty outpatient clinic. Over the past 60 years, it has developed into a comprehensive oral treatment center that integrates clinical care, education, and research within Chongqing. The department recruits doctoral and master’s students in oral medicine and undertakes multi-level teaching and training for undergraduates, interns, standardized training students, postgraduates, continuing education students, and healthcare personnel from grassroots institutions. It is recognized as a National Standardized Training Base for Oral Clinical Residents.

Currently, the department has 13 staff members, including 2 professors, 2 supervisors for doctoral and master’s programs, along with 3 dentists with doctoral degrees, and 6 master’s degree holders. Many of these dentists have pursued advanced studies abroad. The outpatient clinic is furnished with 15 comprehensive dental treatment chairs in its outpatient clinic and offers sub-specialties including oral medicine, restorative dentistry, and orthodontics, serving approximately 40,000 patients annually from Chongqing and the wider southwestern region.

The department is equipped with advanced hardware and software, including root canal measurement devices, root canal treatment equipment, dental microscopes, imported dental implant equipment, digital dental panoramic X-ray machines with panoramic tomography and CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). It maintains strict internal management, particularly in sterilization and infection control, by rigorously adhering to disinfection standards. It has established strict operational procedures to prevent hospital-acquired infections, such as utilizing a set of disposable instruments per patient, individual handpieces, and gloves. All instruments undergo high-temperature, high-pressure sterilization to ensure the elimination of bacteria and viruses while the air, floors, and equipment surfaces are regularly cleaned and disinfected to completely avoid cross-contamination and secondary pollution. Moreover, the department offers convenient services such as online appointment booking, telephone follow-ups; the waiting area provides free drinking water, disposable cups, and tissues. Additionally, oral health education materials are distributed and regular seminars on oral health care are held to enhance public awareness of self-care.

The department offers comprehensive treatments across all oral sub-specialties, including therapies for dental pulp diseases, systematic treatment for periodontal and oral mucosal diseases, restorative dentistry, dental implant procedures, orthodontics, and management of temporomandibular joint disorders.

Specialized diagnostic and treatment services include microscopic root canal therapy, apical surgery, aesthetic resin fillings for dental defects, and periodontal sequential treatments, treatments for oral mucosal diseases, pulp protection and apical induction for young permanent teeth, and pulp preservation for traumatic permanent teeth, space maintenance for early loss of primary teeth, early orthodontic intervention for children’s malocclusion, invisible and lingual orthodontics, pre-orthodontic treatment for adult retrognathia , minimally invasive inlay treatments for large dental defects, micro-invasive full crown restorations, conservative treatment for severe dental defects all-ceramic bonded bridge restorations, as well as the restoration of missing teeth or dental arches using porcelain crowns, full ceramic teeth, removable dentures, and precision attachments, along with overdenture rehabilitation for full mouth restoration, post-operative restoration for patients with oral and maxillofacial tumors, full-mouth implant restoration, and advanced techniques for soft and hard tissue reconstruction, including zygomatic implant technology.

Several physicians in the department serve as vice-chairs, committee members, and executive members in the Chinese Stomatological Association and various provincial and municipal dental associations. Three faculty members have been appointed as experts in the construction of the National Clinical Resident Training Examination Question Bank. The department has undertaken several national and provincial research projects, with several projects receiving awards. Its staff have published over 70 research papers in national and international medical journals, including 13 SCI-indexed and 34 CSCD-indexed papers.
