The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was established in 1959. After more than 60 years of continuous growth, it has evolved into a comprehensive center for the diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases, seamlessly integrating clinical care, education, and research. The department serves as a training institution for postdoctoral fellows, doctoral, and master's students, a National Standardized Training Base for Oral Residents, a key discipline in Oral Medicine in Chongqing, a distinguished specialty at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, and the headquarters of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Emergency Expert Group at the Chongqing Oral Medical Quality Control Center. It is also a member of the National Oral Medicine Center - Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialty Alliance.
The department is equipped with advanced instruments and technologies, including the German Biolay Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Navigation System, digital dental panoramic X-ray machine, and CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography). Focusing on the forefront of both domestic and international medical advancements, the department continuously develops cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment techniques. It particularly excels in the management of oral and maxillofacial tumors, head and neck cancers, various oral and maxillofacial trauma, and other challenging and critical cases, thereby aligning its practices with international standards. Leveraging the advanced equipment and multidisciplinary consultation platform of a comprehensive tertiary hospital, the department ensures standardized diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases. Moreover, it has led or participated in the development of over 10 expert consensus documents and guidelines for the standardized diagnosis and treatment of oral and maxillofacial diseases, and has published Clinical Diagnosis and Standard Treatment Principles of Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases through People’s Medical Publishing House, effectively disseminating its standardized treatment experiences nationwide.
Currently, the department operates 40 beds and manages nearly 30,000 outpatients annually, with approximately 1,400 inpatient admissions each year. Over the past 60 years, it has provided care for more than 1 million outpatient cases and admitted over 80,000 inpatients, thereby accumulating rich clinical experience in the management of various diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial as well as the head and neck regions.
The department currently has 28 medical staff at various levels, including 1 postdoctoral/doctoral supervisor, 5 master supervisors, 3 chief surgeons (professors), and 4 associate chief surgeons (associate professors). Several surgeons hold positions as board members, committee chairs, vice-chairs, and executive members in the Chinese Stomatological Association, Chongqing Stomatological Association, and other specialized committees. Over the years, the department has undertaken more than 50 national and provincial research projects and received 8 awards for medical science progress at the national, provincial, and municipal levels. Its staff have authored, translated, or contributed to over 20 medical textbooks and monographs and have published over 400 medical papers (including more than 100 SCI-indexed articles). The surgeons are renowned not only for their clinical skills but also for their exemplary medical ethics, having received numerous honors such as “Chongqing Excellent Surgeon”, “Chinese Good Doctor”, “Most Beautiful Foreign-Aid Doctor”, and “Model of the Era” by the Central Propaganda Department. Additionally, the department is actively involved in multi-level teaching and training programs for postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master’s students, standardized training participants, undergraduates, visiting surgeons, and nurses, thereby contributing a large number of outstanding professionals to the national oral medical community each year.
