The Department of Ophthalmology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is a comprehensive department integrating clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching. With a history of over 60 years, it was established by renowned ophthalmologists and scholars from Shanghai Medical University, enjoying a high reputation in Chongqing and the southwestern region of China. In 2008, under the initiative of talent introduction, Professor Yang Peizeng, a world-renowned ophthalmologist from Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University (Ranked No. 1 in Ophthalmology field in China), was appointed as the director of the department of Ophthalmology.

With distinctive professional strengths and a pragmatic work spirit, the Department of Ophthalmology has gradually become one of the remarkable forces in the field of ophthalmology nationwide. It is designated as a National Clinical Key Specialty, the Chongqing Branch of the National Clinical Research Center for Ophthalmologic Diseases, the Vice Chairman Unit of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the National Drug Clinical Trial Base for Ophthalmology, Chongqing Clinical Research Center for Eye Diseases, Chongqing Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, and various other prestigious titles. It is also the only ophthalmology department in Chongqing with the "Liangjiang Scholar" project, as well as hosting several other important functions such as the Chongqing Eye Bank and the Chairman Unit of the Southwest Ophthalmology Alliance. It is the Chongqing Myopia Prevention and Control Base for Children and Adolescents, Institution of Editor-in-Chief of the 7th, 8th and 9th Editions of the Five-Year Ophthalmology Textbook, and Editor-in-Chief of the English Ophthalmology Textbook Essentials of Ophthalmology. Chongqing Ophthalmology Specialist and Resident Training Base, Chongqing Nursing Association Ophthalmology Specialist Nursing Training Base. The Department of Ophthalmology has been nominated for the "Best Specialty Reputation Ranking of Chinese Hospitals" by Fudan University for 10 consecutive years (2013-2022), it has been ranked in the "China Hospital Science and Technology Influence Ranking" of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences for 10 consecutive years.

Under the leadership of Professor Yang Peizeng and Professor Hu Ke, the department has established a service goal of "rooted in Chongqing, radiating across the southwest," adopting the "Yellow Mountain Strategy" to build a service brand centered on "people-oriented, lofty aspirations, truth-seeking, and pragmatism." It has established long-term cooperation with more than ten internationally renowned ophthalmic institutions, sending medical personnel for learning and exchanges to advanced ophthalmic hospitals both domestically and internationally. It continuously promotes business technology innovation and talent training innovation, and form a complete professional sector and talent echelon.

The department has made remarkable achievements, possessing internationally advanced examination and treatment instruments and experimental equipment worth over 100 million yuan, with hardware conditions reaching the advanced level domestically.

The department boasts a talented team, consisting of 10 senior professors, 14 associate professors, 25 lecturers, 5 doctoral supervisors, 13 master's supervisors, and 32 personnel with doctoral degrees. In the past decade, it has undertaken more than 180 key projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and international cooperation, with a total funding exceeding 100 million yuan. Over 400 SCI papers have been published in journals such as Nature Genetics, Annals of The Rheumatic Diseases, Cell Molecular Immunology, Nature Communications, Advanced Science, and Ophthalmology. At present, there are 7 members of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and 24 members of the Chinese Medical Doctors and other associations.

In the field of uveitis, the department has reached a world-leading level, serving as the largest uveitis diagnosis and treatment center in the international ophthalmology field. Patients come from 32 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China, as well as more than 10 countries including the United States. In areas such as corneal diseases, cataracts, vitreoretinal diseases, the department has reached an advanced level domestically. In fields like the prevention and control of myopia in children and adolescents, glaucoma, amblyopia, ocular trauma, and lacrimal orbit diseases, it leads in Chongqing.

The department has made significant contributions to the hierarchical diagnosis and treatment, pioneering the implementation of appointment-based diagnosis and treatment in community hospitals, bringing ophthalmological expertise closer to the people.
