The Department of Gynecology was established in 1957 by renowned obstetrics and gynecology experts - Professor SITU Liang, Professor BI Chanqin, and Professor BIAN Duhong, who came from Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Shanghai First Medical University (now Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University) to Chongqing. Over the past 65 years, under the leadership of distinguished professors such as LIU Boning, CAO Quansun, YAO Zhenwei, ZHOU Mingjuan, CHENG Qixin, and LIU Shuwen, the department has evolved into a comprehensive clinical, research, and teaching center focusing on gynecological oncology, gynecological endocrinology, intrauterine diseases, pelvic floor disorders, cervical and lower genital tract diseases, and general gynecology. The department now awards doctoral and master’s degrees and has been recognized as a key clinical specialty in Chongqing. It also holds the prestigious designation as a National Regional Medical Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology and a postdoctoral mobile station for clinical medicine. The department has established global research collaborations with institutions in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Japan, Hong Kong, and other regions, along with leading Chinese research institutions, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Medical College Peking University, Medical College Fudan University, Nanjing University, Sichuan University West China Medical Center, and Chongqing University.
Through continuous effort, the department has been recognized as a Da Vinci Robotic-assisted Surgery Clinical Teaching Center for Gynecology in China, a Ministry of Health (now National Health Commission) Level IV Gynecological Endoscopy Training Base, the president unit of Southwest Gynecological Oncology and Difficult Disease Specialist Alliance, National County-level Talent Development Program by the Chinese Medical Association—Gynecological Laparoscopy Training Base, the National Health Commission’s Endocrine Diagnostic and Treatment Capacity Building Pilot Unit for Gynecology, a demonstration base for the “Prevention of Cervical Cancer and Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment of Precancerous Lesions” Project under the Ministry of Health’s “Ten Years, One Hundred Projects”, the Gynecological Endocrinology Training Base of Chinese Physician Association, an Excellent Ward in National Quality Nursing Services, Chongqing Women’s Health Care Comprehensive Guidance Center, Chongqing Women’s Health Education Training Base, Chongqing Women’s Healthcare System Civilized Post, Chongqing Gynecological Endoscopy Diagnosis and Treatment Center, China Anti-Cancer Association Gynecological Oncology Public Education Base, National Ovarian Cancer Standard Diagnosis and Treatment Quality Control Pilot Unit, Southwest Gynecological Oncology and Difficult Disease Specialist Alliance, Chongqing Gynecological Colposcopy Training Base, Chongqing’s May 1st Women’s Pacesetter Post, Chongqing Women’s Worker Innovation Studio. The department is home to the Reproductive Medicine Center, Cervical Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center, Obstetrics and Gynecology Endocrine Genetics Laboratory, and Obstetrics and Gynecology Ultrasound Room at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, enjoying a high reputation in the Southwest China. Annually, the department manages over 300,000 outpatients and performs more than 20,000 surgeries, offering abundant clinical experience for medical training. The team boasts 3 experts selected for the “National Overseas High-level Talent Recruitment Program”. The department operates under the “Innovative Intelligence Base for Maternal-Fetal Medicine of Higher Education Institutions” (known as the “111 Program” jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs). It also hosts the International Cooperative Laboratory for Reproductive and Developmental Medicine by the Ministry of Education, and the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The research center spans over 2,000 square meters, housing more than 30-million-yuan worth of state-of-the-art medical equipment, including the Da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery system, high-definition laparoscopic system, hysteroscope, ultrasound imaging, tumor markers, and endocrine testing devices, all essential for carrying out the department’s projects.
The department operates 242 beds across three hospital campuses (Main Hospital, Jinshan Campus, and First Branch Hospital) and employs 68 physicians, including 18 senior physicians, 3 doctoral supervisors, and 12 master supervisors. There are also 115 nurses, including 6 senior physicians and 3 master supervisors. The department provides educational and clinical internship training for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, annually admitting and training over 30 doctoral and master’s students, with 265 graduate students cultivated to date.
The department boasts a highly skilled talent pool, including nationally recognized gynecologists such as Professor TANG Junying, Professor TANG Liangtan, and Professor HU Zhuoying. Over the past 10 years, faculty members has published more than 200 SCI-indexed papers, filed over 10 patents, edited or contributed to over 30 medical monographs, and secured more than 90 national and provincial research grants (totaling 8 million yuan). The research achievements have earned the Second Prize in the Chongqing Science and Technology Progress Awards.
