The Department of Pathology at First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, together with the Pathology Teaching and Research Section in Chongqing Medical University, was founded in 1956. Established by a cadre of pathology experts transferred from Medical College Fudan University (formerly Shanghai Medical College) as part of the “Westward Migration” initiative, the department has evolved over several decades into an integrated center for medical services, education, and research, supported by a mature and robust talent pipeline. Consistently, in the Fudan Edition of the Chinese Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking, the department has maintained a ranking of third in the Southwest region for several consecutive years.
Currently, the department consists of 10 professors (including 3 PhD supervisors), 15 associate professors, 12 lecturers, and 46 laboratory technicians. Notably, 7 staff members have pursued advanced studies abroad in countries such as the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan. Faculty members hold numerous prestigious positions within professional organizations, including roles as members of the Pathology Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, representatives in the Youth Committee, members of the Pathology Physician Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, vice-president of the Pathology Equipment Branch of the Chinese Medical Equipment Association, members of the Breast Disease Group of the Chinese Medical Association, member of the Clinical Oncology Pathology Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, members of the Oncology Pathology Subcommittee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, vice-chairman of the Chongqing Pathology Subcommittee, vice-president of the Pathology Physician Branch of the Chongqing Medical Association, and director of the Chongqing Clinical Pathology Quality Control Center. Additionally, several members serve as experts in medical malpractice appraisal for both the Chinese Medical Association and Chongqing.
The department is well-equipped with a comprehensive array of advanced technologies, including routine pathology, immunohistochemistry, special staining, immunofluorescence, ultrastructural pathology, and molecular pathology. These technical platforms enable the department to routinely perform clinical pathological biopsy diagnoses, rapid intraoperative frozen section diagnoses and exfoliative cytology assessments. Notably, the department was among the first in the Chongqing region to establish an advanced molecular pathology platform featuring FISH and high-throughput sequencing technologies, which significantly bolster precise disease diagnosis and personalized treatment strategies. Currently, the department processes over 100,000 routine clinical pathological cases annually and more than 12,000 intraoperative frozen section diagnoses, thereby ranking first among major hospitals in Chongqing.
In 2010, the department was approved as an affiliated unit of the “Chongqing Clinical Pathology Quality Control Center”, tasked with supervising and guiding clinical pathology quality control across the city. In 2011, it became a Ministry of Health-approved provincial remote pathology consultation center, managing approximately 7,000 complex pathology consultations annually from the Southwest region and across the country. In 2020, it was recognized as the “Chongqing Pathology Diagnosis Clinical Medical Research Center”, thereby establishing a crucial platform for the translation of basic scientific research and cutting-edge technologies into clinical applications.
The department has established a comprehensive educational system spanning undergraduate education to master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral training, and has hosted over 100 pathology residents from across the country. Since its designation as a “Clinical Pathology Professional Base” by the National Health Commission in 2016, the department has successfully cultivated dozens of specialists in clinical pathology. Its course on Pathology was successfully selected as a national first-class undergraduate course, and its graduate course Molecular Pathology was among the first to be designated as a “Chongqing Graduate Education Quality Courses”. Committed to teaching innovation, the department has developed a digital database for clinical pathology standardization and a virtual network platform for pathology laboratory courses, thereby achieving comprehensive digitalization of pathology practical training. It has won the Chongqing Teaching Achievement Award and has authored or contributed to over 30 pathology-related textbooks. Faculty members have been honored with accolades such as “National Excellent Teacher”, “Most Beautiful Teacher in Chongqing”, and “Chongqing Master Teacher”.
The department is dedicated to advancing scientific research as a driver for discipline development, having established two stable research directions: tumor pathology and neuro-pathology. Over the past three years, it has undertaken 26 national and provincial-level natural science research projects and published over 100 academic papers in domestic and international journals. Among these publications, more than 20 papers have an impact factor of over 10, and over 30 papers have an impact factor exceeding 5. Additionally, the department has won two Chongqing Science and Technology Achievement Awards.
